INTERNATIONALIZATION (i18n)

Introduction

Internationalization is the process of designing an application so that it can be adapted to various languages and regions without engineering changes. Sometimes the term internationalization is abbreviated as i18n, because there are 18 letters between the first "i" and the last "n."

The internationalization process of Mareblu has the following characteristics:

• With the addition of localized data, the same executable can run worldwide.
• Textual elements, such as status messages and the GUI component labels, are not hardcoded in the program. Instead they are stored outside the source code and retrieved dynamically.
• Support for new languages does not require recompilation.
• It can be localized quickly.

How Internationalization works

At first installation Mareblu open the properties files:

"MarebluResourcesBundle_en_US_metrics.properties"

For an additional properties file, the name of this file begins with the name MarebluResourcesBundle (as above), add codes for the language, the country (ISO-639) and the units (metrics,imperial) end the name with the .properties suffix.

For example, to build the german version, follow these steps:

1. Copy the "MarebluResourcesBundle_en_US_metrics.properties" into "MarebluResourcesBundle_de_DE_metrics.properties";

2. Open "MarebluResourcesBundle_de_DE_metrics.properties" with a simple plain-text editor;

3. Edit/Translate the voices at right side of the equal sign;

4. At the end of this process you have generated a new properties file;

5. Run Mareblu and go to the Help/Options->Configuration menu, choose the right language, country and units, restart the application and "voilà".

If the selected properties file does not exist Mareblu search for MarebluResourcesBundle_de_DE.properties, after for MarebluResourcesBundle_de.properties,  after for MarebluResourcesBundle.properties...

 

Documents internationalization/translation

All the documents are stored in the "[AppPath]/Html" folder. For each language supported there is a folder. The naming convention of these folders is the same applied for the properties files:

en (English)
it (Italian)
fr (French)
de (German)...

For example. To add the german version, follow these steps:

1. Copy the "[AppPath]/Html/en" folder in "[AppPath]/Html/de" folder

2. Translate all the files contained in [AppPath]/Html/de folder without change the file names.

3. Edit [AppPath]/Html/warning.htm adding your warning message.
